Lens & Camera Recommendations

NB : Our recommendations for Lenses & Cameras are based on the testing of 100s of different variations, models and brands.  (We don't have links to any companies, thus are 100% unbiased : Our recommendation are based purely on the quality of their results and practicality)

Canon Lenses :

  • Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM Macro Lens
  • Other lenses like the 100mm Macro and 100mm L Macro are also possible, but don't add much benefit and thus are not worth the extra cost. If you already own one of these, it is possible to adapt the IrisExplorer to these. (contact us for more details)
  • Other lenses might be compatible, we offer a personalised service to help you adapt to your specific lens (link : TechConsult)

Canon Camera :

  • Any Canon DSLR body (eg. 1200D/Rebel T5 , 700D/Rebel T5i ... even older model eg. 450D/Rebel XSi are good cameras)
  • From the point of view of a practitioner the entry level one is fine, but there's no problem if you wish to spend more for extra features (In the lab, over the last year we've used the 100D & 70D and liked them very much).
  • We have just released the IESX iriscope based on the Canon SX170 compact camera. We modify the camera so it can take the IrisExplorer v3. Its a little complicated to make the changes so we don't recommend doing this yourself.
  • In the past we have used The Canon Powershot G series of cameras (G11, G12) and we have tested the Canon G15, these cameras are compatible, but require a special adaptor tube.
  • Other cameras might be compatible, we offer a personalised service to help you adapt to your specific camera (link : TechConsult)

Other Brands :

  • The Tamron 60mm Macro lens is compatible and the results are good, although the focusing required more attention (didn't always get it right the first time, but when focused, the image was great). This lens is available for Canon, Nikon & Sony/Minolta DSLR camera bodies so this lens will enable you to use the IrisExplorer v3 if you have one of those cameras.
  • Other lenses might be compatible, we offer a personalised service to help you adapt to your specific lens (link : TechConsult)

How to measure "Real minimum focus distance"

Minimum focus distance

This is important in order to know how long the adaptor tubes (in between lens and IrisExplorer) need to be.

NB: This is only one of the important aspects that affects whether a certain lens or camera will work with the IrisExplorer lighting system.
